Does Fasting Raise Creatine Number?

So, why does fasting lead to an increase in creatinine levels? The explanation lies in the body’s metabolic changes during periods of no food or drink. When we fast, especially in hot conditions, dehydration occurs, which can lead to a temporary rise in serum creatinine. Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle metabolism, and since our body is working harder to maintain fluid balance, the kidneys may temporarily retain creatinine, skewing the numbers.

Additionally, in studies where participants consumed cooked meat, an increase in serum creatinine was seen due to the transformation of creatine in the meat into creatinine. This dietary factor was especially notable in phase I clinical trials.

The Role of Methodology in Measuring Creatinine

It’s also essential to consider the method of measuring creatinine. Different testing methods, like the Jaffé method, may show an artifactual rise in creatinine levels during fasting. This was particularly evident in a study where fasting led to a significant rise in creatinine when measured using the Jaffé method, even though other tests did not show the same increase.

Should You Be Concerned?

If you’re fasting and notice an increase in your serum creatinine, it’s essential to understand that this may not indicate any kidney damage. It’s likely a transient response to the fasting conditions. However, if you have pre-existing kidney conditions or are on medication affecting kidney function, such as RAAS blockers or diuretics, you may be more at risk for elevated creatinine levels during fasting.
